Barış Şentuna

The instructor of the METU Aikido Dojo is Sensei Barış ŞENTUNA. He has attained the 2nd degree black belt (Nidan) from one of the grand masters of the World, Nobuyoshi Tamura (the student and assistant of the founder, the living legend Morihei Usehiba, and is the founder of the French Aikido Federation). The METU Aikido Dojo has adopted the style and principles of Tamura Sensei and his student Sensei Nebi Vural.

Barış ŞENTUNA was born in 1978 in Bandırma, Turkey. Between the years 1996 to 2001 he studied as an undergraduate in the Department of Philosophy of Bosphorous University, Istanbul - Turkey. During his entire undergraduate education he worked on topics such as history of philosophy, philosophy of love, “I” in metaphysics and Krishnamurti, with Prof Dr. Stephan Voss. From 2001 to 2004 he worked on post-modern philosophical trends and Derrida with Prof Dr Akın Ergüden, in the Department of Philosophy in METU. His Masters thesis was entitled “The Concept of Death in Heidegger and Derrida”. Currently, he is a PhD candidate in the METU Department of Physical Education and Sports, working with Associate Prof. Dr Settar Koçak. Besides his primary field of Sports Organization and Management, he is working on Sports Philosophy, Sports Ethics, Fair Play, Philosophy of the Olympics and Educational Philosophy. The METU Aikido Dojo has adopted the Aikido Philosophy for its foundation. The training explores both Aikido and Eastern Philosophies and allows comparisons with the Western ideologies and life style. Barış ŞENTUNA is currently conducting scientific research on the effects of Aikido on a person’s physical and psychological state, within the framework of his work in the Department of Physical Education and Sports.
